Tiger freshman miss out on 3rd place trophy COLUMBUS - The Wharton freshmen boys basketball team missed out on the third place trophy in the Columbus Invitational Tournament as they dropped a 45-44 decision to Giddings Saturday morning. "We lost on a last second offensive rebound putback," said Wharton coach John Wuthrich. "We played great defense and hustled throughout the game." The Tigers jumped out to a 14-11 lead after the first quarter and went up 26-20 at halftime. Both teams scored eight points in the third quarter and the Buffalos outscored the Tigers 17-10 in the final eight minutes of the game Ashton Washington poured in 18 points. Luther Lathon finished with 11, Kendall Curtis added seven, Ken Lowery had five and Kasey Segura had three. Wharton beat Bellville 32-29 in a first round game on Thursday but then lost to La Grange 57-48 on Friday. In the loss to La Grange, Washington finished with 15 points. Curtis added 12, Lowery had 10 and Lathon scored nine. |
