Brahmas roll past Troy in area round BRYAN - Cold and wet playing conditions didn't keep East Bernard's football team from beating Troy in a Region IV, Division II Class 2A area round playoff game Saturday night at Viking Stadium. The Brahmas dominated the Trojans and prevailed 41- 10 to advance to the regional quarterfinal round. EB will play Refugio Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Bobcat Stadium on the campus of Texas State University in San Marcos. The Bobcats beat Dilley 28-7 on Thursday night to advance. Game time temperatures dipped down in the lower 40s and the wind chill made it feel like 35 degrees. The Brahmas, on four first half touchdowns by Michael Hayes, built a commanding 27- 3 lead. He rushed for 198 yards on the night. Lance Crump scored touchdowns in the third and fourth quarter and rushed for 175 yards The Brahma defense shutdown Troy quarterback Jacob McMurtry, who completed only four passes. He also threw 2 interceptions. Troy took the opening kickoff and started at it's own 26- yard line. Jeremy Conrad picked up 7 yards on the first play from scrimmage and Jordan Hayes picked up a first down on the next play. Hayes then ran 25 yards to the Brahma 45. Two plays later, McMurtry picked up a first down to the EB 31. Then on a third-and-eight from the 28, Troy called time out with 9:05 remaining. McMurtry then had a pass dropped by Jeremy Conrad to set up a fourth-and-eight. Mc- Murtry punted and the Brahmas took over at their own 10- yard line with 8:51 remaining. Brahma Mike Hayes picked up 4 yards to the 14 on the first play. Then on a third-and-seven, Hayes picked up 8 yards to the 25. Two plays later, Lane Crump ran 45 yards to the Trojan 36-yard line. Hayes picked up 4 yards to the 32 on the first play. Then on a third-and-five, Troy was flagged for offside to set up a third-and-one from the 25. Hayes took the ball up the middle for an 8-yard gainer to the 18. Crump picked up 1 yard on the next play. Then on a third-and-eight from the 16, Hayes took a pitch and made to the 12 to set up a fourth-andone. Plunkett's 30-yard field goal attempt hit the uprights. But Troy was flagged for offside and the penalty gave the Brahmas a first-and-goal at the 7. Hayes then ran around the right side for a touchdown with 2:07 remaining to cap off the 12-play, 90-yard drive. Plunkett booted the extra point to put the Brahmas up 7-0. Troy took over at its own 41-yard line after the ensuing kickoff. Conrad picked 12 yards to the Brahma 47 on the first play. On a third-and-five from the 42, a pass by McMurtry fell incomplete. EB was flagged for roughing the passer for a 15- yard unsportsmanlike penalty to the Brahma 21-yard line. Jordan Hayes then made it to the 17 and the first quarter ended. Then on third-and-two from the 13, McMurtry made it to 12 to set up a fourth down situation. McMurtry then picked up first down inside the 11. Andrew Taylor made it to the 10 on the next play. An incomplete pass set Troy up with a third down situation. Another incomplete pass set up a fourth down. Brandon Clark booted a 27-yard field goal with 10:01 remaining to bring the score to 7-3. The kick concluded a 11- play drive. Plunkett took the ensuing kickoff and returned it to the 24-yard line. Hayes then broke 3 tackles and raced 76 yards for a touchdown. A high snap kept Plunkett from trying the extra point kick. It left the Brahmas with a 13-3 lead with 9:37 left in the second quarter. Troy took over at its 24-yard line after the ensuing kickoff. Then on a-third and-12, Adam Kubena intercepted a pass by McMurtry and the Brahmas took over at the Troy 5-yard line. Hayes lost three yards back to the eight on the first play. He scored from the seven on the next play. Plunkett couldn't get the extra point kick off again and it left the Brahmas with a 19-3 lead with 7:17 remaining until halftime. Troy took over at its own 29- yard line following the ensuing kickoff. On a third-and-seven from the 32, McMurtry connected on a pass to the 49. Jordan Hayes picked up 8 yards to the 42-yard on the next play. On a third-and-one, Mc- Murtry recovered his own fumble back to the 45 to set up a fourth-and-four. Troy punted and the Brahmas took over at their own 29- yard line with 4:16 remaining. Crump picked up 4 yards to the 33 on the first play. Troy was flagged for a sideline warning. Hayes then picked up 5 yards to the 38 to set up a fourth-and-one. Crump then made it to the 43 for a first down. Plunkett then kept the ball and made it to the Trojans 29 with just over two minutes remaining until halftime A 5-yard procedure penalty moved the ball back to the 34. The Bulls were flagged again and it pushed the ball back to the 39 and EB called time out with 1:49 left. Crump then picked up 7 yards to the 32 to set up second and-14. On the next play, Hayes took the ball into the end zone for a touchdown with 1:07 remaining. Crump added the 2-point conversion to put the Brahmas up 27-3. Troy took over at its own 31- yard line with under a minute left. On a third-and-seven, Troy failed to pick up first down and the first half ended. EB started at its own 29- yard line after the second half kickoff. Three plays later, Crump picked up 8 yards to the 35 and a unsportsmanlike conduct penalty put the ball at the 49. Hayes then made to Trojan 45. Then on third-and-three, Plunkett kept the ball and made it to the 41 to set up a fourth-and-short. The Brahmas elected to punt the ball and Jared Minks kicked it to the 12-yard line where Troy took over with 9:19 remaining. Two plays later, Cameron Mazoch just missed an interception to set up a third-and-10 for the Trojans. After another incompletion, Troy punted and the Brahmas took over at midfield with 8:58 remaining. Three plays later, Hayes ran to the Trojans 35. Then on a third-and-one from the 30, Hayes made it to the 23. Plunkett than ran behind the block of Clinton Graves to the Trojan 1. Crump scored on the next play with 5:33 left and Plunkett's kick put the Brahmas up 34-3. It capped off a 7-play, 51- yard drive. Troy took over at its own 30 after the ensuing kickoff. Mc- Murtry then connected with Chris Chandler on a pass to the 45. He completed another pass but a procedure penalty brought the ball back to the 40. Chandler then made a catch at the Brahma 38. On a fourth-and-one at the 27, Jeremy Conrad made it to the 23. Barnaby Cornado then picked up a first down at the 13 after catching a 8-yard pass. Tyler Kramr then sacked Mc- Murtry for a 9-yard loss back to the 23. On a third-and-18, EB was then flagged for pass interference and the penalty gave the Trojans a first down at the Brahma 6-yard line. Jordan Hayes lost a yard back to the seven on the first play. Two incomplete passes made it fourth-and-goal. Troy turned the ball over on downs after another incomplete with only 52 seconds left in the third quarter. Three plays later, Crump broke a couple of tackles and made it to 19 and the quarter ended. Crump them picked up six yards to the 25. On a thirdand three, Hayes picked up a first down to the 29. Troy's Angel Lurati then recovered a Brahma fumble at the 39-yard line with 9:03 remaining in the fourth quarter. Chandler took a hit after an incomplete pass with 8:56 remaining in the game. Tyler Kramr broke up another pass to set up a fourth-and-10. Troy turned the ball over on downs at the 30 with 8:44 left. On the following drive, East Bernard had a punt blocked and the Trojans took over at the Brahmas 29 yard line with under seven minutes left in the game, McMurtry kept the ball and made it the Brahma 16 on the first play. Jordan Hayes then ran to Brahma 7 and Conrad picked up a first down to the 5. Hayes was then stopped at the line of scrimmage to set up a second-and-goal as the clocked ticked under four minutes. Troy's Andrew Taylor picked up a fumble at the 10 and ran it in for a touchdown with 3:27 remaining in the game. Brandon Clark's kick brought the score to 34-10. East Bernard's Lance Crump then recovered an onside kick at the 43 and a personal foul moved the ball to the Trojan 42 with 3:24 remaining. Crump scored 10 seconds later and Plunkett's kick brought the score to 41-10. Troy took over at its own 40-yard line with under three minutes left. The Trojans drove the Brahma 32 after Brandon Jenkins caught a 24-yard pass. McMurtry later kept the ball and made it to 17 and the Trojans called time out with 2:31 remaining in the game. Tyler Kramr then recovered a fumble by McMurtry and the Brahmas took over at their own 21-yard line with 2:07 remaining. Three plays later, Crump raced 40 yards into Trojan territory and allowed Brahmas to run out the clock. |
