Owens, Melton earn 24-3A first team football honors

COLUMBUS - Only two Wharton players were selected to the All-District 24-3A football team which was chosen earlier in the month at Columbus High School.
Senior Chris Owens was a unanimous first team selection as an offensive lineman.
Sophomore Marcus Melton was first team pick as a defensive tackle.
Individual honors and other first team selections were dominated by Sealy, Columbus and Needville which made the playoffs.
The three schools combined for 20 of the 26 first team offensive selections and 10 of the 20 defensive picks.
Bluejay senior running back Thadeus Wilkerson was selected the Most Valuable Player.
Columbus senior Curtis Carter was selected the Offensive Most Valuable Player and teammate Manny Leyendecker was voted the Defensive Most Valuable Player.
Sealy sophomore Dexter Downey was selected the Newcomer-of-the Year.
Brent Mascheck of Columbus and Jimmie Mitchell of Sealy shared Coach-of-the Year honors.
