Council moving ahead on new police station The Wharton City Council will move forward on Monday with renovating a new police station. The council on Monday will consider a resolution to award a construction contract for the 1407 N. Richmond Rd. building. Formerly a Houston Lighting & Power Co. facility, the site will soon house the Wharton Police Department and Municipal Court. The city purchased the more than 10,000 square foot structure for $350,000. Asbestos abatement is complete and city crews have finished initial demolition. That included tearing out interior walls and lighting and removing existing curbing and sidewalks outside. Plans are to begin relocating the departments by the end of the year or early 2008.The current police station and court building, 220 S. Fulton, has already been sold. It was purchased by an organization comprised of members of the Wadler & Perches law firm, which is located next door. In other business Monday, the council will consider: • An interlocal agreement with the county for a sidewalk improvement project. The project would bring all downtown walkways up to Americans with Disabilities Act compliance. • A resolution approving allowances for cost reimbursements to active members of the Wharton Volunteer Fire Department and benefits to retired members and their spouses. |
