Dogins selected 24-3A newcomer

SHANIQUA DOGINS ...24-3A Newcomer
COLUMBUS - Wharton freshman Shaniqua Dogins was named the District 24-3A volleyball Newcomer-of-the- Year at last month's selection meeting held at Columbus High School.

The teams couldn't be released until all three playoff teams from the district were eliminated from the post-season.

District 24-3A champion Columbus lost to Wimberly last Friday at the UIL State Tournament in San Marcos.

Dogins totaled up 108 kills and 21 blocks in the 14 district matches. She also had 16 aces.

Columbus senior Elsie Huskey, an outside hitter, was selected the Most Valuable Player.

Needville senior Megan Bludau was selected the Offensive Player-of-the- Year.

Sweeny junior Leah Frazier, a libero player, was selected the Defensive Player-of-the Year.

Columbus sophomore Brandy Huskey was selected as the top setter.

Wharton sophomore Heather Reynolds and senior Megan Joost earned first team honors.

Reynolds, a hitter, had 195 kills in the 14 district matches. She also had 24 blocks and 16 aces.

Joost, a setter, had 457 assists with 10 aces and 52 digs.

Other first teamers included Madison Minks and Laura Whitehead from Columbia; Brittany Byrd, Mandy Moeller and Jessica Polasek from Columbus; Lacey Bosak and Kayla Johns from Needville and Candyce Carter from Sweeny.

Vernqua Taylor was Wharton's lone second team selection. She had 76 kills, five blocks, 134 digs, 18 aces and 25 digs.Wharton senior Brittany Gutierrez was an honorable mention selection. A defensive specialist, she had 91 digs with 23 aces

Sharneace Johnson, Jalessa Jones and Elizabeth Reyes were also honorable mention picks.

Second team selections included Caroline Glithero of Columbus, Sara Miller from Needville, Jessica Jammer from Royal, Brittney Krchanak and Nikki Faldyn from Sealy, KyAra Parker from Stafford and Jalyn Erwin, Jackie Franklin and Kaycee Hillmer all of Sweeny.

Wharton's all-academic selections included Amanda Earls, Brittany Francis, Dogins, Gutierrez, Johnson, Jones, Joost, Reynolds and Taylor.
