Horse shot and killed
Donkey targeted earlier at Hungerford ranch
By BARRY HALVORSON bhalvorson@journal-spectator.com

The report of a horse shot and killed in the Hungerford area is just the most recent incident of gunfire in the area.

The owner of a private ranch located along CR 216 in the Hungerford area called in the killing at 6:26 p.m. Sunday.

The man reported he and family members were out in a pasture when they found the Buckskin quarter horse mare. It appeared to have been shot three times in the left flank.

The man told the responding Deputy Joe Ray Joines and Sgt. John Gutierrez the horse had been seen alive the day before by another family member.

The owner said a dog belonging to an employee at the ranch had also apparently been shot around the same time.

This was the second shooting incident at the property but the first called in, Sheriff's Department Lt. Danny Marek said.

The owner told investigators a 4- year-old miniature Mediterranean donkey had been found dead on Oct. 28 and that he believed it had also been shot.

"We've had a poacher problem in the past along the San Bernard River," Marek said.

"This office has received a number of calls about illegal hunting. This being a rural, ranching county, we take reports like this very seriously."

Marek said shooting and killing an animal is a criminal mischief to livestock offense and is a state jail felony.
