4-H poinsettia sale

The Wharton County 4-H Exchange Program will be selling holiday poinsettias for $10. The last day to order is Nov. 16 with the poinsettias delivered on Nov. 28. Proceeds from this fund raiser will go toward the 4- H New Hampshire trip. To place an order, call the Wharton County Extension Office at 532-3371.

Farmers Market

The Wharton Farmers' Market continues this week at the Wharton Courthouse Square. The market features garden fresh food and handmade craft items and will be held from 9 a.m. to noon each Saturday through mid-December.

Texas Home Health

Texas Home Health is sponsoring a fund raiser for the Wharton County Senior Meals on Wheels Program today. It will be a drive through pickup lunch served from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Wharton County Junior College LeDue Building. Tickets are pre-sale only and cost $6. The goal is to sell 700 tickets for the Wharton Senior Meals on Wheels Program, please help us reach our goal. Delivery is available to Wharton, El Campo and East Bernard businesses with 10 or more purchases. Contact Jena Myska at 713-705-3332 for tickets.

Sivells celebrates veterans

The Sivells Elementary third grade students are putting on a Veterans' Day Program at 8:15, 9:10, 10:10 and 11:20 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8 in the Sivells P.E. Room. For more information, call Pat Herring at 532-6866.

Alzheimer's Caregivers

An Alzheimer's Caregivers Network Gathering is set for 4:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 8, at St. Thomas' Episcopal Church Parish Hall. The Alzheimer's Caregivers Network is for those who are taking care of a loved one who has Alzheimer's Disease, any form of Dementia or Parkinson's. There will be time for sharing resources, voicing concerns, and making contacts for networking among other caregivers. It is always good to know that others are sharing similar experiences and we can learn from one another about resources that are available. The public is invited.

Wharton Garden Club

The Wharton Garden Club is inviting the community to a program on Bromeliads. The monthly meeting will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8 at the Wharton County Historical Museum. Refreshments will be served at 9:00 a.m.

Fish fry

A fish fry fund raiser promising fellowship and fund will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 9, at the First Presbyterian Church, 1602 John Knox. Holiday coping

Houston Hospice - El Campo is presenting "An Empty Place at the Table," a program on coping with the Holidays after a death. It will be held from 9-11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Wharton. For additional information call 979-578-0314.

Camp Zion program

Camp Zion Rising Star Baptist Church will be having its annual 100 Women in Red and 100 Men in Black program at 3 p.m. on Nov. 11. Rev. Eddie Thomas, pastor of the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church of Sugar Land will be the guest speaker. The public is invited.

New Hope celebration

The New Hope Community Church will celebrate 114 years of existence at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11. The guest speaker will be Rev. Doug Warfel and Grace Community Church. For information, call 532-3923.

Remembering veterans

A flag ceremony, "Remembering our Veterans American Legion Post 87 and Ladies Auxiliaries" will be held at 1 p.m. on Nov. 12 at Wharton Nursing and Rehabilitation in the dining hall. The ceremony will follow the center's "2nd Annual Chili Cook-Off." Camaraderie, good food and fun for all - families and veterans welcome.

Veterans Day program

The Pilot Club of Wharton Inc. will sponsor the annual Veterans Day Program at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 12 on the square at the Veterans Memorial. Refreshments will be served prior and after the services.

Nov. 12 veterans ceremony

The residents, staff and family members are hosting a Veterans' Day Ceremony at noon on Monday, Nov. 12 at the flagpole at Avalon Place, 1405 Valhalla Dr. Lunch will be provided after the ceremony.

Book Review Club

The Wharton Book Review Club will meet at 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 12, at the Wharton County Historical Museum, 3615 N. Richmond Rd. Sylvia Thompson will review "Lady Bird, a Biography of Mrs. Johnson," by Jan Jarboe Russell. Season memberships are $25. Guests and individual reviews are $5. Plaza Theatre annual meeting

You are cordially invited to the annual meeting of the membership of the Plaza Theatre at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 12 at the Plaza. In addition to the election of board members, the agenda will include state of the Theatre addresses from the members of the executive committee. Memberships may be purchased at the door. Although anyone may attend, only members in good standing may vote.

Senior citizens lunch

Area residents age 40 and older are invited to a senior citizen luncheon at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 13 at St. James Full Gospel Baptist Church. The church is located at 815 Mattie St. in Wharton, Bishop B.B. Willis, pastor. For more information or for a ride to the church, call 533-1730.

Archeology lecture

The Plaza Theatre cordially invites the community to a lecture entitled "Digging Israel: My Summer of Archeology" by the Rev. Deborah A. Cenko at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15. Cenko, pastor at Wharton's First Presbyterian Church, spent an adventurous summer digging at Ramat Rahel, a rich archeological site in southern Jerusalem. She will display artifacts she helped dig up as well as slides of the dig and her travels to Bethlehem, Nazareth, the Sea of Galilee, the Dead Sea, Masada, Qumran, Old Akko, Haifa and Caesarea. Admission is free although donations will be accepted.

Church homecoming

The First Baptist Church of Glen Flora, Rev. E. Gillis, pastor, will be having their church anniversary homecoming and family and friends day at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 18. Rev C. Owens will be the guest speaker and the public is invited.

WHS PALS blood drive

The Wharton High School Pals will host a blood drive on Tuesday, Nov. 20 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the auditorium. For information, contact Ryan Quinn at 532-6800.

Christmas Bell parade

The Wharton Chamber of Commerce's "Ring the Christmas Bell" Parade will be 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20. The route will be from East Milam Street, then around the courthouse square, turning south on Fulton and west on Burleson. There will be entertainment before the parade, and, a community Christmas Tree will be officially lighted about 6:45 p.m. Santa will be available after the parade for children and for photos in the gazebo. Parade entry forms are available at the chamber office, 225 N. Richmond Road, Wharton. You can pick them up at the chamber office or the chamber can mail, fax or email a copy to you. DAV super raffle

The Disabled American Veterans of Wharton County will be holding a 100 Gun Super Raffle. Tickets are $20 each with the drawing held Dec. 3. Proceeds will benefit the DAV Chapter 72 Transportation Fund. The raffle is being sponsored by Everyday Heroes Inc. B&G Club registration

The Boys & Girls Club of Wharton is now registering for the 2007-2008 After-School Program. Membership fee is $20 per person and operating hours are from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The club is open for kids ages six to 12 and is open until 7 p.m. for teens.

Community calendar

A calendar of local events is maintained by the Wharton Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture. Before scheduling an event, check with the chamber for possible conflicts. And notify the chamber, 532-1862, as early as possible to get your event on the calendar. There is no charge.

Dateline Wharton is a calendar of upcoming events in Wharton and surrounding communities. Normally space permits only events that will occur in the next two weeks. It is intended for special activities open to the public rather than regularly recurring meetings.
