Raymond Stoppenhagen 1936-2007

Raymond Larry Stoppenhagen of Houston died Friday, Oct. 19, 2007 at the age of 71. He was born in Wharton, one of seven brothers and sisters.

Mr. Stoppenhagen received his bachelor of business administration degree from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville and served in the Texas Air National Guard for seven years. In his career, he worked at Superior Oil Company as an accounting supervisor and at Home Petroleum Corporation and J. M. Huber Corporation as a revenue accounting supervisor. He was also employed by Standard Oil Company, Exxon Corporation, Meridian Oil Company, and Enron Oil and Gas Company. He served on the board of directors for the Petroleum Accountants Society of Houston. Mr. Stoppenhagen was an active member of Memorial Lutheran Church, serving on many boards and committees. His pastimes included real estate, softball and barbecuing. He later worked as a referee and umpire in the city's football and softball leagues.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Martin and Bertha Stoppenhagen; two brothers, C.C. and Robert; and two sisters, Helen Maclin and Doris Talafuse. He is survived by his brothers, Ed and Norman, and seven nieces and six nephews.

Friends were invited to a visitation with the family from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26 in the Library of George H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive.

Graveside services and interment will be held at 9:30 a.m. today, Saturday, Oct. 27 at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, 600 Sawyer in Houston. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at Memorial Lutheran Church, 5800 Westheimer Road with Pastor John B. Day officiating.

Mr. Stoppenhagen family requests that memorial gifts be given to St. John Lutheran Church, 614 Pecan Street, Wharton, TX 77488.
