County funding needed for juvenile offenders More money to detain juvenile offenders heads up the agenda for Monday's regular meeting of the Wharton County Commissioners Court. The meeting will start at 9:30 a.m. and will be held in the commissioner's courtroom of the County Courthouse Annex building. "We run into this every year," County Judge John Murrile said. "It seems like we don't budget enough and they have to come to us at the end of the year. We always add more to the budget and it gets bigger and bigger, but we're also seeing more juvenile crime." Wharton County sends juveniles it detains to one of two facilities - Victoria County or Fort Bend County. The Victoria facility cost is $95 per day per person while the Fort Bend charge is $97.70. The commissioners also have a public hearing set for 10 a.m. for the purpose of setting the speed limit in the Lasata subdivision in New Gulf to 20 miles per hour. Following the public hearing, the commissioners will vote on the item. "We hold the public hearing to get input," he said. "We are talking about a through street so there might be people opposed because it slows traffic and they have to be given consideration as well. This isn't for a school zone, but it is a possible public safety issue because it is a residential area with young family and small children." In other items on the agenda, the 2018-20 IBCHOU Wharton_v1 8/commissioners will take action on: * Authorizing the judge to sign partially executed certification on substantial completion on Wharton County Courthouse Phase I and II. * Determine the method of sale for the Precinct 1 barn and land. Options include going out for bid and/or listing it with a realtor. * Approve funds for repairs to the county environmental officer patrol vehicle. * And authorize the judge to sign an interlocal agreement between the city of Wharton and Wharton County for street construction and maintenance 8/16/07 2:28 PM Page 1 services. |
