Guadalupe Gomez

Guadalupe "Lupe" Gomez, age 74, of Wharton, died Friday, Oct. 12, 2007 at home following an extended illness. He was born on Aug. 26, 1933 in Crescent, the son of the late Miguel Gomez Sr. and Julia Martinez Gomez.

Mr. Gomez was a lifelong resident of the Wharton area and worked in maintenance for TexasGulf Sulphur until his retirement in 1984. After he retired he and his wife owned and operated a snow cone stand in Wharton. He married Mary Castro on March 25, 1968 in Wharton. He was a member of Our Lady of Carmel Catholic Church and was a faithful usher for many years. Mr. Gomez loved to watch his grandchildren and great-grandchildren play sports, he enjoyed working at the snow cone stand, and found pleasure in fishing and carpentry. In addition to his parents, Mr. Gomez was preceded in death by sons, Ruben Gomez and John Jimenez; a brother, Ernest Gomez; a sister, Janie "Penny" Gomez; and a step-mother, Sylvia Gomez.

Visitation and a rosary were held on Monday Oct. 15, 2007 at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2007 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Bryan Heyer officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Serving as pallbearers were Jonathon Longoria, Vincent Jimenez, Reynaldo Becerra Jr., John Ray Jimenez, Ruben Gomez and Michael Gomez.

Honorary pallbearers were Aaron Gomez, Adam Gomez, David Frankie "Boo" Longoria and Joey Jimenez.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Gomez of Wharton; daughters and sons-in-law, Alice Becerra and Reynaldo and Paula Longoria and David; sons and daughters-in-law, Joe Jimenez and Theresa and Lupe Gomez, Jr. and Lisa, all of Wharton; sister, Lilly Rodriguez and husband Tony of McKinney; brother, Mike Gomez and wife Mary of Wharton; 27 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.
