Broussard paces WCJC rodeo team

UVALDE - WCJC sophomore Trey Broussard earned All-Around Cowboy honors at this past weekend's Southewest Texas Junior College competition.

Broussard, who calls Esterwood, La. home, finished second in saddle bronc riding with 69 points and he was third in bareback riding with 75 points.

The Wharton men's team finished third in the point standings with 381 points.

Panola took the title with 418 1/2 points and Sam Houston State University was second with 384 points.

The WCJC women's team finished fourth with 139 points.

McNeese State University took first place with 353 points. Sam Houston State finished second with 305 1/2 points and Texas A&M was third with 208 points.

WCJC cowboy Casey Halderman of Shiner with Sam Houston State's Justin Hendrick took first in team roping with 145 points.

Bullrider Kyle Blank of Gonzales, La. took first with 82 points and Brenden Averett was second with 79 points.

Pioneer Jonathan (Tate) Wheelis of Cuero finished fourth in steer wrestling with 88 points and Cade Rice of Sealy was seventh with 32 points.

Jesse Arrendondo of Driftwood finished eighth in bareback with 63 points.

Rudy Austin of Zachary, La. teamed up with Sam Houston State's John Bankhead and finished eighth in team roping.

In barrel racing, WCJC cowgirl Macie Haferkamp of Cuero finished third and Lauren Cox of Cotulla was fourth.

WCJC competes at the Northeast Texas Community College rodeo on Oct. 18-20 in Mount Pleasant.
