EAST BERNARD - "We had a barn burner," said EB football coach Jerry Long Monday after the Brahmas held on for a 34-33 win over Van Vleck at Memorial Stadium.

The Brahmas, now 2-0 in District 27-2A, face their toughest test of the season on the road against Hithcock who beat Brazos 26-18 in their first district game last week.

"I told our kids that if their goal is the district title - which it is - it has to go through Hitchcock," said Long.

"We're in the catbird seat right now," said Long. "We've played two district games and won them both and they've played one.

"We have to go there with the same amount of effort."

Hitchcock, who beat Brazos 36-18 last Friday, owns a 4-1 season record.

"We're just playing good as a team right now," said Bulldog coach Gary Carney.

"When you don't have a loss everyone is big. Once you post a district loss, it's up in the air at that point.

"Everybody had senior ball clubs last year and we were young," said Carney. "We just have some people who can play football for us."

Boling plays its first district game against Danbury who the Brahmas beat two weeks ago. Winless Van Vleck and 1-1 Brazos have open dates.

"After we play Brazos, we'll have a pretty good idea how it will unfold," said Long.

The Brahmas first open date is Oct. 24.

Hitchcock was picked to finish fourth by Dave Campbell's Football magazine.

"They are underated," said Long. "They were a young team last year and have improved."

Bulldog Stadium down in Galveston County is always a tough place to play.

"That's what I hear," said Long. "I've never coached or been there.

"You're not going to expect to get calls from the officials and that sort of thing. There's some negatives and adversities you have to get over."

The 4-1 Bulldogs have outscored their opponents 140-119 and are averaing a whopping 481 yards per game. On the other side of the ball, their defense is yielding 339 yards per game.

Hitchcock's skilled position players include runningback Jordan Turner who has scored seven touchdowns and rushed for 689 yards.

Anthony McClain has scored three touchdowns and rushed for 392 yards and Darius Dotson has scored one touchdown and rushed for 188 yards.

Quarterback Morris Tuck has completed 67 of 121 passes for 941 yards. He has nine touchdown passes and four interceptions.

Bradley Williams has caught 18 passes for 244 yards, Devante Provost has caught 16 passes for 238 yards and Turner has caught 13 passes for 214 yards.

"We have some people who can run and catch the ball," said Carney. "We have a lot of weapons. Every week we have four or five kids scoring," said Carney. "We have more depth than we've ever had."

Long believes the Bulldogs are the real deal.

"They are very explosive on offense," said Long. "They are involving a lot more players."

With that said, the Brahmas must play great defense.

"We have to make sure we're lined up properly," said Long. "I think that they have a few tendencies that we can key on defensively as long a we recognize what they're in."

"You still have to stop them, and we stop their speed by keeping them on the sidelines. Our offense is crucial this week. We have to make first downs and put together long drives and eat up the clock."

"We've got to do our best to disrupt their passing game. We're always going in to stop the run. That's my philosophy."

Hitchcock has alot of speed with its skilled players and that's beneficial.

"We have two big ones back-toback." The Brahmas host rival Brazos on Oct. 20.

The Brahmas will counter with the runningback trio of Mike Hayes, Chris Plunkett and Lance Crump.

Hays has scored six touchdowns and rushed for 569 yards. Plunkett has scored four touchdowns and rushed for 563 yards and Crump has scored three touchdowns and picked up 387 yards.

Carney expects a tough test from the Brahmas.

"They have a good football program and coach Long does a great job over there," said Carney. "There's no two ways about it; it's going to be a battle."
