Alice Guffey

Alice Elizabeth Kana Guffey, age 79, of Wharton, died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2007 in a Wharton hospital following an extended battle with diabetes and Parkinson's Disease. She was born on April 11, 1928 in Smithville, youngest of six children, to the late Rudolph Kana and Hermina Hluchanek Kana.

As an infant, Mrs. Guffey moved to El Campo and was a 1944 graduate of El Campo High School. She married Elgean "Gene" Pershing Guffey on April 20, 1946 in Wharton. He preceded her in death on Nov. 14, 2005. Gene and Alice were owners of the Guffey Grocery Store in Wharton from 1949 until 1976. After their store burned down, she worked with her husband at Gene Guffey Real Estate from 1981 until 2003. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Wharton. Mrs. Guffey enjoyed going to dances and playing bridge with her many close friends.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2007 at First United Methodist Church in Wharton with the Rev. Paul Quiggins officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Survivors include her daughters, Nancy O'Hearn and husband Jim of New Braunfels, Donna Chambers and husband Jimmie of Wharton and Carol Guffey of Houston; sons, Bob Guffey and wife Sarah of Sugar Land and Bill Guffey of Houston; brother, Beno Kana and wife Eleanor of El Campo; grandchildren, Scott Chambers and wife Tammy, Todd O'Hearn, Stephanie Chambers and fiancé Eric Matula, Casey O'Hearn, Laura Guffey and Michael Guffey; great-grandchildren, Kirby and Cale Chambers; sisters in-law, Sophie Kana and Bernice Kana of El Campo; sisters-in-law and brothersin law, Dottie and Ed Lechler of Wharton, Mary and Donald Obenhaus of Bonus, Margaret Guffey of Bay City and Adele and Donald Guffey of Bay City; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, Mrs. Guffey was preceded in death by her sister, Marcella Kaiser; and brothers, Walter, Adolph and Louis Kana.

Pallbearers are Bob Guffey, Bill Guffey, Scott Chambers, Todd O'Hearn, Casey O'Hearn and Michael Guffey.

Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Vic Driscoll, Bob Wynn, Buddy Thompkins and Talmadge Fordham.
