WVFD to host first- ever BBQ cook-off There are still openings for teams interested in competing in the Wharton Volunteer Fire Department's inaugural 2007 barbecue cook-off. The cook-off is scheduled for this Friday and Saturday and will be held at River Front Park across from the Wharton County Sheriff's Department. Barbecue chairman Paul Resendez said the event is being held for the first time this year and will serve several departmental purposes. "The money we raise is going to go to purchase equipment for our new fire truck," Resendez said. "We also think this is an event that will allow the department to get more involved with the people of the community," he added. "It will give them a chance to come out and enjoy themselves." Resendez said that in addition to the cook-off teams there will also be music by a DJ on Saturday. Check-in is from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday. The entry fee is $100 per team and registration is limited to 30 teams on a first come, first serve basis. Judging will be Saturday with beans at 11 a.m., chili at noon, chicken at 1 p.m., ribs at 2 p.m. and brisket at 3 p.m. Team showmanship will also be judged. The awards presentation will follow the conclusion of the brisket judging. For more information or an application, contact the Wharton Fire Department at 532-4811, ext. 601. |
