Ask Billie
Fred Barbee, Jr. was one of those persons never willing to sit back and let the world go by. Wharton County is a better place because he was willing to live on the edge, to be a leader. When he believed in something he made every effort to work, to make it happen. When I was first ask to write a column for the newspaper more than 20 years ago it was a total surprise. I expressed to Mr. Barbee that I knew nothing about writing. English was my least favorite subject and writing a theme was the pits. With his smile he said just put your thoughts down on a piece of paper. Fred Barbee never felt he was too old to try something new and took pride in the success of the East Bernard Express. Until recent health problems, there was nothing in Wharton County that did not interest him. I am grateful for his encouragement. When I first became a Rotarian I needed to visit another Rotary Club. At that time the El Campo Rotary was not open to ladies and you really felt you were invading foreign territory. Everyone had their own place to sit and what was a visitor to do. Up steps Fred Barbee and invited me to sit with him. He became my Rotary hero. So many other Rotary ladies have mentioned his kindness and welcoming spirit. Fall is always special in Wharton County and there are more activities than many of us can keep up with. We encourage you to use the Wharton Journal- Spectator calendar in each week's paper and also the Wharton Chamber website. Those folks make every effort to keep us informed and being involved is really what community is all about. There is one special event in October I hope you have on your calendar and that is the Law Enforcement Officer's Spaghetti Cook-off. The date is Saturday, October 20 and the place is the Crescent Fair grounds. Serving starts at 5:30 p.m. and the cost is $5 - if you get your ticket early - or $6 at the door. This is the 2nd year for this Wharton County 100 Club project and it is great fun. Only law enforcement folks are eligible to compete and competition is getting fierce. There are secret recipes; secret ingredients and the challenges are mounting. We promise you great food and an evening of fun. Winners will be announced after you have had an opportunity to choose your favorite.
Tickets are available from 100 Club Board members, law enforcement officers and at Wharton Feed and Supply. |
