Lady Tiger spikers 'Crown' Royal in 24-3A match Strong play at the net and a solid serve receive was the difference as the Wharton dominate Royal 25-11, 25-6, 25-13 Friday afternoon in Tiger Gymansium. The win pushed the third place Lady Tigers to 7-2 in 24-3A standings. Royal sliped to 0-8, District leading Columbus was 8- 0 before playing Sealy last night and second place Needville was 7-1 before playing fourth place Sweeny who was 4-4. "My girls didn't play their best match but they played hard the entire time," said Wharton coach Shauna Eller. "We made some hitting errors but they were aggressive ones so that was all right. I like the players to be aggressive with a lead. When you play safe you get beat. "We have to play at our level regardless of the opponent." Up front, the Lady Tigers were led by Heather Reynolds and Shaniqua Dogins. Working out of the offense, Reynolds put down 12 kills, most coming of sets from Megan Joost, who finished the three games with a total of 26 assists. Dogins had a team leading 15 kills as she regularly poached Royal overpasses and sets. She also recorded teams highs with two blocks and six aces, including three in a row early in the opening game to set the tone for the night. Adding to the offensive attack were Sharneace Johnson and Vernequa Taylor with six and five kills, respectively. The Lady Tigers' concentration on serve receive was also impressive. Reynolds had a team high seven digs with Brittany Gutierrez collecting four and Jalessa Jones a pair. As a team, Wharton allowed Royal to scoring runs off their own serve on only five occasions in the match. The first of those instances came in the opening match when the Lady Falcons had a five-point run keyed by three Wharton hitting errors. The home team righted the ship and responded with a five-point run of their own fueled by three Reynolds kills. In the second game, Royal scored only once off their own serve, on a Wharton hitting error, while the Lady Tigers had runs of eight, six and four points. In the final game, Dogins upped her level of play collecting six of her kills on poach shots. Joost benefited the most as she reeled off points on eight straight serves. The Lady Tigers visit Columbus Tuesday and play at Columbia next Friday. |
