Funds raised for funeral of EB toddler
By BENJAMIN C. SHARP bensharp@journal-spectator.com

EAST BERNARD - Instead of planning a third birthday party, Anthony Quintero's family is making arrangements for his funeral.

The 2-year-old East Bernard toddler died suddenly this past weekend while on a trip to Missouri.

Family members said the youngster somehow contracted bacterial meningitis and passed away Sunday after spending a couple of days in the hospital.

Adrian Ramirez said the loss of his nephew has sent shockwaves through his entire family.

"It's crazy. I still can't believe it," Ramirez said.

"He was just starting life. His birthday is next month."

As if the grief over the toddler's passing is not enough to cope with, the family now has to suffer with trying to cover unexpected funeral costs.

That's where M&J's Drive Thru comes into the picture. Owned by Mario and Janie Hooks, the 1043 Main St. business in East Bernard is currently collecting funds to help offset the funeral expenses. Quintero was the Hooks' grandson.

To help even more, Lionel Prado and J.R. Prado are washing cars in front of the business. All funds raised will go to the Quintero family.

"They didn't have any life insurance. This is one way we will be raising money," Lionel Prado said.

So far, about $135 has been collected.

With funerals costing thousands of dollars these days, much more is needed.

Plans are to continue the car wash from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. into this next week. Donations may also be dropped off at the store.
