Varsity tennis team finds stiff competition

BRYAN - Wharton's tennis team ran into some stiff competition in dual matches against Corsicana and Waco Midway on Saturday.

Corsicana took 16 of 19 matches from Wharton and Midway was perfect in 10 matches.

"We lost to two very good teams," said Wharton coach Roben Eller. "I thought we played pretty well but we could not win the big points."

Midway is the 10th ranked team in 4A.

"I think this will come as we play more close matches. These were only our third and fourth matches of the year.

"We never like to lose but I feel good about how we competed and we have something to build on," said Eller.

In boys singles matches against Corsicana, Ric Doetsch won 6-3, 6-4. Chris Feyen lost 6-3, 6-4; Ryan McMicken lost 6-2, 6-4; Sylvester Mayfield lost 6-1, 6-2; Patrick Tulley lost 6-4, 6-4 and Calvin Boehm lost 8-0.

In girls singles matches, Paige Mata won 8-3. Ashley Aaronson lost 6-4, 6-0; Jessica Kainer lost 6-1, 6-4; Kim Janik lost 6-1, 6-2; Rachel Gubels lost 7-5, 6-2; and Paige Bahnseon lost 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.

In boys doubles matches, Feyen and McMicken lost 6-3, 6-3. Doetsch and Mayfield lost 7-6, 6-3 and David Barnes and Kole Kubicek lost 6-1, 6-2.

In girls doubles matches, Aaronson and Janik lost 6-2, 6-1. Rachael Kocian and Kainer lost 7-5, 6-3 and Katie Ondrias and Bahsen lost 6-4, 6-4.

In a mixed doubles match, Tulley and Gubbels lost 6-4, 7-5. In boys singles matches against Midway, Feyen lost 6- 3, 6-3. McMicken lost 5-1, 6-0 and Tuley lost 6-4, 5-7, 6-0.

In girls singles matches, Asronson lost 2-6, 6-2, 6-2. Janik lost 6-2, 6-2; Gubels lost 6-3, 1-0 and Mata lost 7-5.

In boys doubles matches, Doetsch and Mayfield lost 6- 4, 6-1 and Barnes and Kubicek lost 6-1, 6-2.

In girls doubles matches, Aaronson and Janik lost 6-2, 6-1. Kainer and Kocian lost 6-5, 6-7, 6-1 and Bahsen and Ondrias lost 7-5, 6-4, 7-5.

And in a mixed doubles match, Tuley and Gubbels lost 6-0. 6-1.

Wharton plays Willis and Montgomery at Willis this Saturday at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
