Down two games to none, Alvin Community College coach Geoff Kiessling told his team that WCJC players thought they had already won Monday night's District M Region XIV volleyball match in Pioneer Gymnasium.

Those words inspired his team as the Dolphins won the next three games 30- 20, 31-29, 15-10.

WCJC won the first game 30-28 and the second 30-20.

Kiessling was ejected before the second game ended after receving two red cards for arguing calls.

"We had a little bit of controversy in the middle there but our girls wanted in more in the second half," said Kissling.

"Our ball control got a lot better so we could use our middle and freeze up our blockers."

Five service and three out of bounds hits proved costly in the fifth game.

"That proved very advantagous for use because if they had not missed those serves, it would have been a lot closer," said Kiesssling.

Alvin built leads of 7-3 and 9-5 before WCJC came back to make it a 10-8 game.

But a service error by Christina Mocenau made it 11-8. An out of bounds hit by Emmy Rodgers left Alvin three points shy of the win.

A kill by Amanda Yeager cut the lead to 12-9 but Alvin took advantage of two hitting errors to gain match point.

WCJC battled back to make it 14- 11 but an questionable call on the back court line ended the two-hour match.

"We weren't mentally strong enough to pull it out," said WCJC coach Brinna Florus. "We let down after the second game."

Florus admitted double-digit services errors proved costly.

"I told the girls that serving was going to help us win tonight," said Florus. "We did that the first four games but the last game hurt us."

I told them to serve agressively and didn't want them to be complacent."

WCJC took a 26-25 lead in the fourth game after a kill by Chelsie Fowler but Alvin came back to go up 29-27.

A block by Rodgers tied the score at 29 but a kill by Alvin's Samantha Wilson and hitting error ended the game.

WCJC totaled up 60 kills in the match. Fowler finished with 19. Rodgers added 20, Helen Camarillo had nine. Yeager had six, Kadeem Brinkley had five, Mocenau had four.

Brinkley and Rodgers also had two blocks. Fowler and Camarillo had one each.

Mocenau had 53 setting assists and five aces. Fowler had two digs and one ace. Brinkely had foru aces and Yeager had two.

Tracey Beicker had 29 digs. Fowler finished with 20, Mocenau added 13, Yeager had 11, Brinkley had eiht and Rodgers had one.

Alvin improved to 2-0 in league play and WCJC slipped to 2-3.

"We play every team twice and we just have to get better and stronger each time that we play," said Florus.

The Dolphins host 3-0 San Jacinto today and WCJC plays winless Coastal Bend College in Beeville on Thursday.

"We still have a long way to go," said Kiessling.

"We're going to learn a lot from this match tonight because they pushed us very, very far.

The Lady Pioneers play a tri match at Brookhaven College in Dallas on Sept. 29 and visit the Dolphins next Monday.
