Wharton tennis team off to fast start

Wharton cranked up its team tennis season earlier this month and now owns a 2-0 record in dual matches.

Wharton took 19 of 21 matches from Calhoun on Sept. 6 and took 11 out of 16 from Brazoswood on Tuesday.

"We're off to a good start," said Wharton coach Roben Eller.

"We have a difficult schedule ahead of us so we must continue to improve."

In boys singles matches against Brazoswood, Chris Feyen beat Lyndon Kagler 8-4. Ryan McMicken beat Flint Patterson 8-5, Eric Doetsch beat Troy Mills 8-4, Patrick Tulley beat Ben Equist 6-5 and Calvin Bohn beat Trent Morris 8-3.

In girls singles matches Kim Janik beat Saloni Deai 8-5. Paige Bahnsen beat Niki Alonzo 8-5; Magen Lesak beat Amy Freeman 8-6, Haley Rainer beat Vaness Trevino 8-4, Shaina Lowe beat Amy Romero 8-4, Rachel Kocian beat Sue Vann 8-5, Ashley Aaronson lost to Helen Tau 8-3, Jessica Kainer lost to Sara Fish 6-3 and Paige Mata lost to 8-4.

In boys doubles matches, Feyen and McMicken beat Carlbeg and Edquist 97. Doetch and Mayfield beat Miles and Morris 9-7 and David Barnes and Kole Kubicek lost to Sebrock and Nguyen 8-6. In girls doubles matches, Aarson and Janik lost to Tau and Vann 8-3. Kainer and Kocian beat Desai and Marks 8-5. Bahnsen and Katie Ondrias beat Small and Romero 8-2 and Lowe and Rainer lost to Alonzo and Trevino.

In a mixed doubles match, Tully and Gubbels lost to Fish and Kageler 8-6.

In boys singles matches against Calhoun, Feyen lost 6-4, 6-3. McMicken won 6-3, 6-3; Metcalf won 6-0, 6-0, Mayfield won 6-2, 6-1; Tully won 6-2, 7-6 and Boehm won 6-2, 6-2.

In girls singles matches, Kainer lost 6-2, 6-1. Aaronson won 6-1, 6-1; Lesak won 6-0, 6-1; Mata won 6-2, 6-0; Rachel Gubbels won 6-4, 6-3 and Sarah Gubbels won 6-1, 5-7, 7-6.

In boys doubles matches, Feyen and McMicken won 6-1, 6-1. Metcalf and Mayfield won 6-0, 6-3 and Tully and Boehm won 6-4, 6-1.

In girls doubles matches, Aaronson and Kocian won 6-1, 6-4. Kainer and Mata won 6-3, 6-2; Bahnsen and Ondrias won 6-3, 6-2 and Rainer and Kendall Watson won 8-1.

And in a mixed doubles match, David Barnes and Rachel Gubbels won 6-4, 6-1

Wharton hosts Edna in dual matches next Thursday and competes at the Fort Bend Invitatonal Tournament in Houston on Friday.

They'll play dual matches against Waco Midway and Corsicana next Saturday in Bryan.
