Habitat constructs third home
By BENJAMIN C. SHARP bensharp@journal-spectator.com

Habitat for Humanity is beginning its third home in Wharton, and already sights are set on constructing more in Boling.

Habitat President David Samuelson said two lots have been purchased in Boling and applications will soon be accepted by potential homeowners. Future plans are to try and construct homes in East Bernard and other parts of the county.

Since its founding in 2004, the East Wharton County Chapter of Habitat for Humanity has built two homes in Wharton. Both are on Sheppard Street - next door to each other - on land donated by the City of Wharton. A third home is about to be built on that same parcel.

"We've got plans and a homeowner and hopefully we can get started pretty soon," Samuelson said.

City officials said it's been their pleasure to help the nonprofit organization. In addition to the land, the city has waived necessary building permits on all the homes.

"It's part of the city's effort to bring more housing to this area," City Manager Andres Garza Jr. said.Habitat homes are built by volunteer labor and private donations. Recipients are required to contribute "sweat equity" by assisting with the construction. They must pay off the home through a no-interest 25-year loan.

Volunteers are critical. Samuelson said church organizations and civic groups are being scheduled for particular weekends to try and make the most out of the labor that's available.

There's always room for more. "We need volunteers," he said.
