Wharton cross country teams compete at Calhoun Beach Invitational meet

PORT LAVACA - Wharton's boys cross country team ran into some stiff competition at Saturday's Calhoun Invitational held at Magnolia Beach.

Wharton finished 11th with 306 points.

Host Calhoun took the team title with 30 points.

Robstown was second with 68 points; Gregory- Portland was third with 73 points; Gonzales was fourth with 130 points; Schulenburg was fifth with 144 points; Flour Bluff was sixth with 190 points; Ganado was seventh with 191 points; Edna was eighth with 237 points; Moulton was ninth with 240 points; and Refugio was 10th with 260 points.

Gregory Portland's Harmon McClanahan won the 3-mile race with a 16:11 time.

Cahoun's Anthony Baldera was second with a 16:34 and Gonzales's Jorge Jamie was third with a 16:40.

For Wharton, Pedro Luna finished 40th among the 72 runners with a 22:40.

Ryan Salazar was 60th with a 24:04. Kristopher Kubeska was 62nd with a 25:05 and Andrew Hernandez was 66th with a 26:49.

In the girls division, Wharton didn't field a complete team.

Judith Sanchez finished 53rd on the two-mile course with a 15:53, Jessica Kainer was 65th with a 17:31 and Angela Alanis was 73rd with a 19:11.

Host Calhoun took the team title with 46 points. Gonzales was second with 53 points and Tuloso-Midway was third with 78 points.

Flour Bluff, Industrial, Moulton, Edna and Ganado also competed.

Flour Bluff's Keelin Tracy won the race within 12 minutes. Gonzales's Maria Aguayo finished second in 12:29 and Moulton's Ryland Darliek finished third in 12:30.

Wharton competes at the Brazos Invitational in Wallis this Saturday.
