EAST BERNARD - East Bernard's football team will try and put last week's 27-10 loss to Edna behind them on Friday when the Brahmas host Shiner.

"I told the kids that a loss is only significant if you let it lead to another one," said EB coach Jerry Long.

"You have to put it behind us and move on. We've got to bounce back."

The 0-2 Comanches are coming off a 17-0 loss to Brazos.

"We played some real good teams and it was kind of like that last year," said Shiner coach Steven Cerny.

"We knew it was going to be tough. When you play good teams, those weaknesses come out and that's what I like about it." Long expects a tough test from the Comanches who were 8-5 last year

"It's going to be a typical Shiner team that's physical and will play hard the entire game," said Long.

They are very well coached and even though they're 0-2, we can't read into that," said Long. "We always have to expect a good game from them."

Cerny also expects a tough game from the Brahmas.

They are so far ahead of where they were last year," said Cerny. "To me they look really good.

"Those guys look good and I really thing their strength right now is their offensive line. Those guys really come off hard and low."

The loss dropped East Bernard to 80th in Pigskin Prep's Class 2A poll with a power rating of 127. Shiner is ranked 46th in Class A with a 119 power rating. The Brahmas are a 9-point favorite.

"To beat a team like East Bernard you have to play a perfect game," said Cerny. "You almost have to be in mid season form to beat them. We're going to be up for the challenge and really try to put a better performing team on the field this week."

Cerny's biggest concern is turnovers.

"We're putting the ball on the ground too much," said Cerny. "We had five fumbles last week and that really hurt us."

Long doesn't have any major concerns entering the game.

"We have to progress and get better," said Long. "It's just a matter of going out on the field and being a better team."

Shiner went 8-5 last year and has a handful has talented players back.

It starts with quarterback Kyle Condel who missed the first two games with an concussion.

"He makes them go," said Long. "If you do a decent job stopping him, you go a long way."

He'll play on Friday and will give the ball to Lance Otto, D.J. Pustka and Matthew Hibs.

"They are going to run the ball similar to us," said Long. "Whatever you give them, they are going to run the veer and stick with it.

"We have to take care defensively of our option responsibility snap after snap after snap. If one kid forgets their job, they can rip you on it."

Long emphasized the importantance of line play.

"Our responsibility and our keys this week on both sides of the ball will be important," said Long.

"We have to do a better job executing our offense.

They are all big but we don't put too much emphasis on it," said Long. "Our goal is a district championship and that doesn't start for a couple of weeks.

EB plays Stockdale on Sept. 22 and visits Danbury in the 27-2A opener on Sept. 28.

"We want to get better and build on that first district game," said Long.

The Brahmas were without the services of lineman Jacob Hudman who had his bell rung last week. He's expected to be back on Friday.

Barnaby Coronado stepped in and did an admirable job at linebacker according to Long.

He also singled out Chris Plunkett who had a good game on both sides of the ball and booted a 34-yard field goal.

Sophomore Austin Matura was standout on the offensive line.
