Wharton's football team took several steps backward in last Friday's 31-0 loss to Brazosport at Tiger Stadium.
"We definitley have some things that need to work on," said Tiger coach Gary Van Sant who aggreed that nothing positive that came out of the game.
Fortunately a week off comes at the right time for the Tigers to regroup before they visit county rival El Campo on Sept. 21.
After playing to a tough 18- 16 loss to Barbers Hill in the season opener, the Tigers regressed.
"We definitely need an off week and need to re-group," said Van Sant.
A lack of discipline also hurt the team as Wharton was flagged for several personal fouls. At least two players were ejected from the game - one for taking off his helmet.
The offense was nonexistent, totaling 70 yards and crossing midfield only once.
"We have to catch the football," said Van Sant, referring to players who dropped passes last week.
"We just need to work on the things that we need to do to be successful in district.
Wharton visits Sealy in the 24-3A opener on Sept. 28.
Wharton's defense played well in the first half before giving up some big plays.
"We played well but then we made some mistakes," said Van Sant.
Van Sant said this week's practices will be back to the basics.
"We'll try and get some of our fundamentals a little bit sounder," said Van Sant. "It's like going
back to two-a-days."
I think that we're missing some of the basic skills necessary to play good football."
While there are a lot of seniors on the team, most have limited varsity experience.
"Very few have playing time," said Van Sant.
There's still some guys that need some playing time. We're tying to get the right people in the right spots to make us successful."
Van Sant plans to shuffle Triston Washington and Robert Herrera in at quarterback.
"Each one has their strength and each has their weakness," said Van Sant.
