Agriculture scholarship

The Wharton County Beef and Forages Committee is taking applications for the Wharton County Beef and Forages Committee Scholarship. One $2,000 scholarship will be awarded and paid over two semesters. To be eligible, a student must have completed at least 60 credit hours or be enrolled in a graduate or veterinary school program. Applicants must be pursuing a degree in an agriculturally related field. Applications may be picked up at the Texas AgriLife Extension Service, Wharton County office or online at wharton-tx.tamu.edu. Applications are due July 1, 2008. For more information, call 532- 3310.

WHS Class Reunion

Members of the Wharton High Graduation Class of 1988 are being asked to help plan the upcoming 20th Class Reunion planned for later this year. Those interested in participating are asked to contact Rachel Cruz at rzurc3101@sbcglobal. net or Donald Allen at 453-0353 or bgcwharton@sbcglobal.net.

Senior Class Mass

The Catholic Daughters Court St. Bernadette No. 1108 is sponsoring a mass and worship service in honor of the 2008 Senior Class at 7 p.m. today at the Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard. All seniors and their families are invited to attend.

Nursing Home Week

The Wharton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center is hosting several activities today and Thursday in conjunction with its celebration of National Nursing Home Week. Volunteers will be honored with an appreciation lunch in the dining hall at 1:30 p.m. today. Thursday, employees will be honored with an appreciation lunch in the dining room at 2 p.m.

Chicken Spaghetti

The Greater St. Stephen Baptist Church, 2500 N. Fulton Street, is holding a chicken Spaghetti fundraiser for the usher board today with serving starting at 10 a.m. Meals are priced at $7 and include chicken spaghetti, garlic bread, cake and a lettuce and tomato salad. To order, call 282-2284.

Club diamond dedication

The grand opening ceremony for the new baseball field for the Boys and Girls Club of Wharton originally scheduled for Thursday, May 15 has been rescheduled for 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 29. The baseball field is located behind the club facility.

Domino tournament

The Junior Lions Club will be holding a domino tournament in the front lobby of the Wharton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center starting at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 16. At 6:30 p.m., Polka music by the Sulaks and Bill Havins and Ozzie Ullmann will be provided. The public is invited to attend.

Teen Lock-In

The Boys and Girls Club of Wharton will be hosing a Teen Lock-In from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., May 16-17. The cost is $5 per person and is open to students currently in grades 7-12. Activities will include basketball tournaments, game room tournaments, dancing and food.

JHCWH Golf Tournament

The inaugural Justin Hurst Celebrity Waterfowl Hunt Golf Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, May 17 at Newgulf Golf Club. The tournament will be a four-man string scramble. Entry fee is $200 per team. Morning and afternoon flights are available. Proceeds will benefit the Justin Hurst Celebrity Waterfowl Hunt Scholarship Fund. Bake Sale

The New Mount Olive Baptist Church will hold a bake sale beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 17 in front of the Palais Royal store in the Eastgate Plaza Shopping Center.

Wallis American Legion

The Wallis American Legion Dance Club is having a dance from 8-11:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 17 with music by Donnie Wavra at the Wallis American Legion Hall. All guests are welcome and there will be plenty of coffee and door prizes. Admission is free for club members and $7 for guests and the general public. Narnia Auditions

The Plaza Theatre on the Square in Wharton will hold open auditions for Joseph Robinette's dramatization of C.S. Lewis' The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe at 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 18 and Tuesday, May 20. Director Katrese Skinner is seeking a widely varied cast of all ages and descriptions to bring to life the adventures of the four Pevensie children, who step through an old wardrobe in an English country house and find themselves in the never-to-be-forgotten land of Narnia. Summer registration

The Boys and Girls Club of Wharton will begin accepting applications for summer membership on Monday, May 19. Registration hours are 11 a.m. to noon and 1-8 p.m. Monday-Friday. Early registration is $35 per person and runs until May 29 when the price goes up to $40 per person. Summer membership dates will be Monday, June 9 through Wednesday, Aug. 6.

Wharton Booster Banquet

The Wharton Athletic Booster Club will be hosting the Wharton High School Varsity All- Sports Banquet on Tuesday, May 20, at the Wharton Civic Center. The guest speaker will be Edward Dale Lechler, 1970 WHS graduate and recipient of the coveted Rick Kucera award. A barbecue dinner catered Hinze's will be served beginning at 6:30 p.m.. Varsity athletes attend free of charge. For all others, the cost is $7.00 per adult or $5.00 per student. Tickets are available for purchase at the WISD Education Support Center and the Wharton High School Office. Please come out and support our athletes.

Blood Drive

The South Texas Medical Clinics will sponsor a blood drive from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20, at the Wharton Clinic.

Wharton Babe Ruth

The deadline for registration for the Wharton Babe Ruth program for players ages 16-18 is Wednesday, May 21. Registration forms can be picked up at Tiger Park after 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For information, call Anton Peter at 532-8178.

VFW Fundraiser

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4474 will hold a chicken fried steak dinner fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 22, at the American Legion Hall. The price is $7.50 per plate with dine-in, take out and delivery available. Baked goods will also be sold during the fundraiser. Seven Star Baptist

The Seven Star Baptist Church in Hungerford will hold a pastor and wife pre-appreciation service for Pastor R.I. Campbell II and wife at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 22. The message will be delivered by the Rev. A.L. Edwards of Greater New Prospect Church in Needville. The pastor and wife appreciation service will be held on Sunday, May 25 at 3 p.m. with the Message delivered by Rev. Vester P. Jones of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church in Rosenberg.

Library closed

The Wharton County Library will be closed Saturday, May 24 and Monday, May 26 for the Memorial Day holiday and Thursday, May 29 for a staff development day.

B and G Club Golf

The Boys and Girls Club of Wharton 7th Annual Dave Williams Memorial Golf Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, May 24 at the Wharton Country Club. The tournament is a four-man handicapped scramble. The entry fee is $60 per player or $240 per team and includes card, green fees, food, drinks and souvenir cap. All proceeds benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Wharton. Kincer benefit The dinner/auction/dance to benefit John and Patsy Kincer is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 24 at the Wharton County Fairgrounds Community Center. The family lost their home and belongings in a fire on April 18. Admission is a $10 donation. Tickets are available at Collin's Music, For All Seasons, Hair Etc., The Flower Shoppe, Razzmatazz, Wharton Feed; John Deere in El Campo and Amegy Bank in East Bernard.

New Mount Olive Mission

The New Mount Olive Baptist Church, Jimmie Wright pastor, will hold a mission workshop from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church in Mackay on Saturday, May 24. Registration is $10. Sister Leatha Green is the workshop chairperson.

Mount Calvary Mission Day

Mount Calvary Baptist Church, Rev. A.J. Jones pastor, is holding a mission workshop starting at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 24. The church will hold its annual Mission Day at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 25. Rev. Kuykendall will bring the message. Everyone is invited. The church is located of FM 102 North of Wharton.

Grove Hill Baptist

The Grove Hill Baptist Church will celebrate its annual Family and Friends Day at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 25. The Rev. Gaston of the New Revelation Baptist of Rosharon will be the guest speaker along with his congregation. For information, call 979-453-0514.

Women's Day Program

The New Mount Olive Baptist Church is hosting a Women's Day Program starting at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 25 at the church. The guest speaker will be Rev. Claude Prince of the Greater Palestine Baptist Church in Vines. Evangelist Cheryl Hunter of Houston will be the theme speaker for the program.

Summer reading

Wharton County Library is pleased to announce its Summer Reading Program for 2008, The Texas Reading Club Jubilee: 19582008! The first day of registration is Tuesday, May 27; and children and youth to age 18 are invited to register. The special kick-off program is on Thursday, June 5 at 4 p.m.
